Hi, I’m Ted, and I’ve been giving voice lessons for nearly twenty years. I teach students who sing in all styles, from pop-rock and country to musical theater and opera. My own journey to becoming a proficient singer was a long, strange trip! I earned a bachelor’s degree in vocal performance in my early twenties, and while I learned a lot about music and the theory and terminology of vocal technique, my actual singing was, to be honest, not much better than when I entered college. My teachers were well-intentioned and some were fine singers themselves, but unfortunately, they couldn’t get me from where I was to where I knew I could be as a singer.
After college I studied with a number of teachers privately, and I learned even more about vocal pedagogy and different approaches to singing, but it wasn’t until my late twenties when I finally found a teacher whose methods really worked and made sense to me (and I still study with him to this day). He stressed the importance of building strength in the voice, and it was only as my voice became stronger that all the other things I had learned started to make sense, and I was finally able to sing at a professional level.
I believe the reason I have been successful in teaching people how to sing well is that I’ve been down the wrong roads and learned the hard way what works and what doesn’t. My approach guides students, through exercises and songs of their choice, to build their voices from the ground up, and establish a secure vocal technique that can be relied upon in high-pressure performance situations. If you’ve been frustrated by a lack of progress in the quality of your singing, or if you’re just starting out, I can help you achieve your goal of becoming the best singer you can be. Thanks, and I hope to see you soon!
